The power of positive

Just finished reading Human kind by Rutger Bregman (again). So refreshing.

Whenever you feel like a naive idealist or that all the conflicts in the world are getting “a bit” too much, pick up a copy. It is a great reminder that we as humans have succeeded, not because of competition and conflict, but because of collaboration and kindness.

I particularly like the epilogue where Bregman maps out his “Ten rules to live by” which I thought I’d share.

  1. When in doubt, assume the best

  2. Think in win-win scenarios

  3. Ask more questions

  4. Temper your empathy, train your compassion

  5. Try to understand the other, even if you don’t get where they’re coming from

  6. Love your own as others love their own

  7. Avoid the news

  8. Don’t punch Nazis

  9. Come out of the closet: don’t be ashamed to be good

  10. Be realistic

Funnily enough… and who knows if Spotify was listening… this song by Ewan McLennan and George Monbiot started to play while I was reading with the chorus…

There is such a thing as society
That keeps us from loosing our minds
That’s working and living and laughing together
That makes us humankind

Happy reading and listening.
